How to Measure For Curtains
We recommend you always use a steel measuring tape. We don't mind whether you use inches, centimetres or millimetres. Consider taking a picture of your window on your mobile telephone or digital camera. Providing us with additional information will help us to help you all the more.
Measuring for curtains on a track
Suitable for Pencil Pleat
Please note Pinched Headings and Goblet Pleat are best hung
on Poles
For the best possible fit, take time to measure your window carefully. The curtain track should be positioned 10cm - 15cm (4" - 6") approx, above the window. Take into account the distance between the top of the window recess and the ceiling, and extend 15cm - 20cm (6" - 8") either side. On smaller windows it may help if you extend the track to make the most of the light and also make the window appear larger.
A.) Measuring the width
Measure the total width of the rail. Don't forget to account for the overlap - this is an additional measurement, normally 2.5cm (1"), that will allow the curtains to overlap in the middle when they are closed.
B.) Measuring the drop
Before measuring the drop, decide whether you want your curtains to fit below the sill or to the floor.
We suggest that:
Curtains that fall below the sill finish 15cm (6") below.
Floor length curtains finish 1.5cm (0.5") from the floor.
Measure the drop from the top of the rail.
Always measure in at least 3 positions across the track or pole as floors and sills are rarely level. To avoid curtains dragging across the floor or sill we recommend you use the shortest of these 3 measurements.
Measuring for curtains on a pole
Poles are suitable for the curtain heading types:
Pencil Pleat, Eyelet, Tab top, Triple/Pleat and Goblet Top
For the best possible fit, take time to measure your window carefully. The curtain pole should be positioned 10cm - 15cm (4" - 6") above the window and extend 15cm - 20cm (6" - 8") either side.

Measure the total width of the rail (excluding finials). Don't forget to account for the overlap - this is an additional measurement, normally 2.5cm (1") that allows the curtains to overlap in the middle when they are closed.

For pencil pleat, triple pleat or goblet top curtains
This type of heading is meant to show the pole as part of the treatment to your window.
Measure the drop from the eye of the small metal ring at the bottom of each curtain ring. This will prevent the pole or rings from being obscured by the curtains.
For eyelet or tab top curtains
Measure the drop from the top of the pole.
Always measure in at least 3 positions across the track or pole as floors and sills are rarely level. To avoid curtains dragging across the floor or sill we recommend you use the shortest of these 3 measurements.
If you are purchasing a new pole we suggest you wait until your curtains are ready for installation. You can then place your curtains on the pole and hold them to the window to check the position is correct for you.
