Blinds can be every bit as eye-catching as curtains, especially in modern homes and are practical, durable and cost-effective. The style and material you choose depends on a number of factors; you may want to block out light or keep heat in for example, or you may be looking for a specific kind of blind to provide a backdrop to curtains, drapes or valances.

Measuring your window for blinds

If you have decided to do the measuring yourself, we recommend you follow these guidelines:

Measuring your window for blinds

Measuring inside a window recess

  • Check the window recess is clear of any obstructions so your blind will hang freely when extended fully.
  • Ensure the recess is a minimum of 75mm (3 inches) deep, otherwise there will not be enough room for the operating mechanism.
  • Measure the width from side to side (A to B) and the height from top to bottom (C to D) (Diagram 1). As windows can be uneven, check in several places in case your measurements vary.
  • Write down the narrowest measurement in millimetres. Use a metal tape measure for accuracy.

  • Measuring outside a window recess

  • First you need to decide how much fabric you want to overlap on all sides – we recommend at least 45mm (1¾ inches)
  • Accurately measure the width from side to side (E to F), and then add a further 38mm (1½ inches) to ensure there is enough room for the operating mechanism. Measure from top to bottom (G to H) to the length you require (Diagram 2).
  • Write down the narrowest measurement in millimetres. Use a metal tape measure for accuracy.
